Peacemakers
These four men, (L-R) General William T. Sherman, General Ulysses S. Grant,
President Abraham Lincoln and Admiral David Porter, met aboard the steamer
River Queen a few days before the surrender of General Lee and the signing
of peace. They were discussing the terms of the surrender. The
original painting hangs in the White House in Washington D.C. You can see
this masterfully reproduced painting in the parlor of the U.S. Grant Home in
Galena, Illinois.
Grant Family
General U.S. Grant and his family, 1865. Ulysses and Julia Grant had four
children: Frederick Grant (1850-1912), Ulysses S. "Buck"
Grant Jr. (1852-1929), Ellen "Nellie" Grant Sartoris Jones
(1855-1922) and Jesse Root Grant
(1858-1934).
Grant Home
The U.S. Grant Home in Galena, Illinois is located at 500 Bouthillier
Street. The home was built in 1860 for Galena resident Alexander Jackson.
In 1865, a group of Galena businessmen purchased this home for General Grant and
his family as an appreciation gift for Grant's service in the Civil War.
The home was presented to the family on August 18,1865. Still today, 90%
of the furnishings in the home are original to when the Grant family lived
there. The home is open Wednesday - Sunday, March - October 9:00 a.m. -
4:45 p.m. and Wednesday - Sunday, November - February 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
